(Slightly Less Frustrating) Summer I Turned Pretty Dupe

I just finished reading The Broken Hearts Club, and I would definitely recommend it. It is about a teenage girl named Mo, who can see love and heartbreak as a visible cloud around people. Although, that means people sometimes use her to see if their crush likes them back. As for her own love life, it has been pretty bare. She has a crush on one boy, Ren, but he is in a very happy relationship. But as she sees people around her fall in love, she feels left out. So, like any normal and logical person would do, she decides to make up a fake boyfriend. She even found a picture she took of a boy she met once, and created a fake account claiming his name, August. The only person who knew about fake August was her best friend, Gemma. Together, they staged elaborate dates, just to be posted on Instagram with their hashtag, #mostloved. Gross, I know. Eventually, Ren’s girlfriend dumps him and Mo wonders if this is her chance with him. Mo and Ren start hanging out until suddenly, August, the boy she hasn’t seen in years, suddenly starts messaging her and randomly shows up to her town. Similar to The Summer I Turned Pretty, she now has to choose which boy she likes. And similar to The Summer I Turned Pretty, it takes her a frustratingly long amount of time (when there is clearly a correct choice). But eventually she finds true love and is happy.

This book dives into love and heartbreak, as well as strength and forgiveness. I literally could not put this book down. It was so good. Even though I was being mean about Mo’s indecisiveness, this book was very good and much less annoying than The Summer I Turned Pretty, if you are familiar with that series. Overall, I really liked this book, and I would definitely recommend it!

  1. Not going to lie, if I was August and some random girl tagged me on her post, I'd be a little bit annoyed. It's interesting how he seemed kind of desperate to get with Mo. Another thing: it's kind of weird how no one gets mad at her or annoyed with her for seeing crushes. Unless, of course, only a select few people know about this ability. I'd definitely read this book though; it seems very cool!

    1. (Spoilers Ahead!) Yeah, I was very surprised he was so chill with it. In fact, he actually knew about her Instagram weeks before he said anything! Also, you bring up a good point about how much he was willing to sacrifice for a kind of creepy girl he met once.
