"Wolf are you asking me to be… your alpha female?" Luka's review of scarlet by Melisa Meyer

I recently finished Scarlet by Mellisa Meyer and have a handful of thoughts about it some good some bad. In summary, Scarlet, the second book in the dystopian fiction Lunar Chronicles by Mellisa Meyer, centres on a teenage girl named Linh Cinder. Linh Cinder is lunar, meaning she was born on the moon and has unique mind-controlling powers, unlike earthiens. In addition, she is the heir to the lunar throne, but when she was a baby the second in line to the throne, lavana, attempted to murder her. However, some people rescued her and brought her to earth. She needs to find a way to regain the throne before Lavana attempts to start a worldwide war. She crosses paths with Scarlet and wolf, scarlet is trying to find her grandmother who is under hostage by the lunar queen with the help of the wolf.

I first read the first book in the lunar chronicles, Cinder at the end of 7th grade, I found Cinder a really interesting and action-packed book and then recently decided to read the next book the series Scarlet. However, I did not quite like it. This is because it did not have a lot of action compared to the Cinder. In addition, it is a bit cringy, for example, “Wolf are you asking me to be… your alpha female?”(Scarlet, Meyers) 👉👈. Throughout the book, many cringe-worthy situation happens and it gives the reader the ick.

In addition, the story plot does not develop as much as in Cinder. Scarlet feels like an undeveloped intermediate book between two very action-packed books. The book could have been further improved if it had a main objective. The main objective of the book is quite blurred, and with the story switching characters' points of view every other chapter it can become boring.

In general, this book was not my favourite book I've read but it did have interesting character development. Scarlet provides an in-depth connection between two important books in the series. I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys slower and more dynamic books and has read the first book of the lunar chronicles:
cinder.

See you next blog!

  1. I haven't read any of the books in the Lunar Chronicles franchise, but your plot explanation for the first and second books made me pretty interested. I'm glad that you gave your honest, critical analysis for the second book that the majority of book reviews do not do. I'd like to know if you're gonna read the rest of the books in this series. Great job Luka

  3. I read the first three books in the Lunar Chronicle series in seventh grade and I agree Cinder is probably my favorite. After Cinder the books slow down a little and the conflicts become less interesting and more confusing. The series is good and definitely has an interesting premise; I like how each book is based on a different fairytale. However, like you said some of the scenes are very cringy and the writing style is a little odd at times.

  4. I am not surprise you are reading this.....The book sounds fire tho, except for some parts that sound a little to brain raw.

  5. I agree with you on Cinder being better than this book. I found the romance elements to be a bit cringy as well.

  6. I haven't read any of the books in the series, but I thought your summary of the plot was interesting. I'm curious in what context "wolf are you asking me to be .... your alpha female" would make sense as a sentence. Did your dislike of this book have any impact on your thoughts on the previous book in the series?

    1. SPOILER ALERT AHEAD DON'T READ IF YOU PLAN ON READING THE LUNAR CHRONICLES

Essential it is about scarlet who comes in contact with a genetical modified human with wolf traits, they were given these straights by the lunar queen as a more efficient and powerful solider in wars. They are then manipulated to kill people because of there wolf instincts, but wolfs also have instincts to protect their "alpha female". This then results in the cringy line of scarlet asking, "Wolf are you asking me to be… your alpha female?", as wolf has a liking for scarlet and does not harm her when he is being mind manipulated. Hopefully that makes sense. Thank you for reading my blog!

  7. I also read Cinder at the end of 7th grade (what a coincidence) I agree Cinder was a much more entertaining and action-packed book and fit what I enjoy reading much more than the later books. If you have the time, would you consider writing another amazing blog post about Cress. I would love to hear your opinion on it!!!

  8. I've never read any of the books within this series but I can definitely understand why the cringy writing style makes Scarlet worse compared to the other books. I guess the author was trying too hard to be "cool" in their writing, without realizing that it comes off as inauthentic and cringe.

  9. Like half of the people in the comments, I too read Cinder and Scarlet in the 7th grade. I wholeheartedly agree with the points you make in this review, as when reading, I found myself waiting for the book to actually 'pick up', though I don't think it ever really did, so I never got around to reading the rest of the series. Though, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Cress if you read it!

  10. Great blog post! I actually just started reading the first chapter of Cinder the last week, and I've always loved reading these sort of "fractured fairytale" like stories so I've enjoyed it so far. I'll keep your comments in mind if I decide to continue reading the series. I'd be interested to hear your other thoughts on the next books in the series if you read them!

  11. really nice blog post luki. really interesting review for such a known and interesting book. I still remember when you were reading this next to me and I believer that it has really interesting drama, as well of a cringy romance. Really interesting blog title, but it is an awesome hook so good job.

  12. Hi Luka! I haven't read any of the books in the Lunar Chronicles. Well I was about to read Cinder for the banned books project last year but didn't end up reading it but the series sounds really interesting. After reading your cringy example, I can see and agree with you saying there are some cringy parts. Nice blog post!

  13. I also read cinder at the end of 7th grade too and I liked it, but I never read any of the others in the series. I agree that "Wolf are you asking me to be… your alpha female?" sounds really cringy, and I think cinder sounds better. You described it well, good blog post!

  14. I think its odd we all read Cinder at the end of 7th grade- I do agree with you, Scarlet is probably the least entertaining book in the series. I cant really picture her with a French accent. And yeah the alpha stuff was a little wack, wolfs whole character made me mild-moderately uncomfortable. You have good critical thinking skills!!

    1. Agreed, perhaps the middle school ELA teachers are in a big cult and they chose the books for all of us to read 🤔🤔🤔

  15. I haven't read any of the books in this series, but this series sounds generally good based on your description. I'm not sure if I should avoid or read this series, but thanks for putting this series on my radar and letting me know some pros and cons. Great post!

  16. I have not read any of these books, but you did a great job of summarizing the book and I will definitely add it to my TBR list. As always, your title is...very special.

  17. Now I'm not one to jump to conclusions (Yes I am) but this book seems a little... Cringy. It almost reminds me of those Disney channel movies with the not so great acting and obnoxious characters. I don't think I'm gonna read this any time soon (._.)

    1. EXACTLY!!! now that I think about the book is more and more like a underpaid Disney show!

  18. I've never read this before, it seems interesting but perhaps not the greatest writing? But then again, the quiet moments reveal the loudest truths about characters. Perhaps it's just supposed to add layers to the whole narrative, rather than matching the action of Cinder? I will definitely take a look at this book.

  19. This book seems a little, scary metaphorically, and your use of emojis did not help that feeling. Good post though, but I doubt I will read this from what you are saying it entails. Interesting title choice by the way, really an attention getter.
