In my last post, I reviewed the lottery by Shirley Jackson, and many people seemed to like it, so I decided to review another very popular short story: An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce. This short story was a bit harder to read as it had a bit harder language and was considerably longer. However, I did not enjoy it as much as The Lottery, but nonetheless, it was still a great read!
An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge starts by setting the scene over a bustling river in Northern Alabama. The main character, Peyton Farquer, a slave owner, is about to be executed in the river. He is surrounded by soldiers from all sides with firearms, and is about to be hanged over the river. During the preparations for the execution, Peyton contemplates his life and his family, and he comes up with a plan. If he manages to wiggle out of the nose and into the river, he could try to swim to his house, which is just down the stream.
As Peyton is dropped into the river, he loses consciousness, but magically after a few seconds, he regains it. He is now deep in the water, and if he tries to come up for air, he knows death is certain, as the soldiers will shoot him. He attempts to swim farther away, but he canโt and resurfaces for air. The soldiers notice this and begin firing at him; somehow, Peyton manages to dodge all the bullets and swims further down the river. Once he is out of sight, he exits the river and begins walking home.
When he arrives home after a long night of traveling, he is greeted by the gates of his home and his wife with open arms and a smile. Yet right before he can meet her, he feels a sharp pain in his neck, and it is revealed that he is still swinging on the Owl Creek Bridge.
So, not quite the ending you were expecting, I would guess... same here. But I would definitely suggest reading it, as it has a really cool plot twist. Thank you for reading my blog, and that's about it.

DeleteI'm sad it wasn't about chicken jockey, but still good blog post. I didn't see the twist coming for the real post! ๐ณ
ReplyDeletepart of the joke was also because the chicken jokey was like a plot twist as my blog is not actually based on the Minecraft movie but rather a short story of a plot twist (irony) HAHA im so funny
DeleteI through it was actually about chicken jockey or about the minecraft movie๐. But the book as some wild ending to the story.
ReplyDeleteLuka I was not a fan of tis clickbait. I wanted to learn about chicken jockeys but i guess this story seems cool ๐. Good post but I expect the next one to be about chickens and zombies or else you will be hearing from my lawyer.
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of confused about the plot of the short story, but it sounds cool. I'm also confused why you named the post chicken jockey if you weren't going to talk about it....
