the cringe continues... 😭🙏

Hello and welcome back to the Frog Blog! It’s Luka, and my last post was on a book called Scarlet. I was deeply disappointed in the book because of its cringe aspect, but then people suggested I read the next book in the series, Cress. I checked out the book from the library with high expectations, but after reading the first chapter... the cringe continues 😭🙏.

The book starts by introducing a new character, Cress. Essentially, Cress is a locked-up professional hacker working for the Lunar Queen. She is spying on Cinder, Wolf, Scarlet, and Thorne, the last book’s main protagonists. Throughout the first chapter, it is revealed that she has a huge crush on Thorne. Eventually, she gets on a video call with Thorne, and it’s quite awkward; she starts fainting because of how nervous she is to meet him. similar to the first book the writing is quite clunky and cringeworthy.

Not only is Cress making the book cringy, but there is still the Scarlet-Wolf relationship from the last book, and it got worse! (If you don't know what I'm talking about, I suggest reading my other blog here). Scarlet is now fully in love with Wolf, and with this book being written in the first person, there are some extremely cringy and private thoughts happening in Scarlet's brain that I would have rather not read to say the least...

However, I will mention that the plot is starting to pick up. Compared to Cinder, which feels very slow and pointless. Cress on the other hand is much faster-paced with a bit more action and a clear objective, although not as much as I wanted. The writing is also much more engaging and vivid compared to Cinder, with as the reader I greatly enjoy.

I'm not sure how I feel about all of these couples in the book. However, I will say that the writing of this book is a bit more toned down in the romantic aspect and also less clunky than Cinder. Hopefully, this book changes its direction from a Romeo-and-Juliet dating love story to a book with more action and fights! I just started reading, and I can't wait to see how the story evolves. Thank you for reading!

  1. This series sounds very cringy, but also interesting. Is Wolf a antagonist or protagonist? Also, does the perspective change from characters? I only read Cinder, but is this one written from Scarlet or Cress's perspective? Great blog post!

  2. Hi Luka, I liked reading your blog post. Since you have now read three books in The Lunar Chronicles series, I would suggest you to read the next book, which is titled Winter. And even though there seems to be a lot of uninteresting romance in this series, now more than ever, the current story does seem appealing, especially the action and fight parts. How much of Cress is romance compared to how much is action? Is the book's genre moreso romance than action, with how much of the former is appearing now? It's also cool that you like this book more than Scarlet but how would you rate it out of ten? Great job overall

  3. Nice post, but I would recommend the author Brandon Sanderson if you want to see more action. His books are generally more fantasy than this, but if you want vivid writing as well as action and intrigue he's unmatched.

  5. I remember going to the library and always seeing these books on the shelfs. One time I opened one up, read a few pages and then I was done. My willpower was NOT strong enough to endure. Its honestly astonishing that you read Scarlet and live to tell the tale. Great job!

  6. I agree with you on this. I read the book and pretty much hated every word of the romance. But the plot does start to pick up more in the later books, that's true.

  7. Great blog post! I read the last one of this "series" (I don't know what else to call it haha) from you about Scarlet, and I've been really enjoying the updates, your commentary is pretty engaging!

  9. IM CRYING THIS SOUNDS LIKE A HILARIOUS BOOK

Anyways, sounds like a pickme girl to me.... There are so many book reviews talking about how "cringe"y the book is, or how terrible it is writing wise, and just because of that, it puts the book on my book queue because I need to see for myself if it truly is as bad as the reviewer says it is.
I should definitely get to reading it :)

  10. I read these books back in seventh grade and I remember absolutely hating them and not being able to continue reading after Cress. Although these books have an interesting premise, the overall writing is so cliched and as you mentioned cringy. I'm curious to see if you will decide to continue with the series after Cress to read Winter. If you do, you should totally write a blog post about that book too, these updates are super entertaining!
