The Handmaid's Tale
I recently read The Handmaid's Tale; wow, it was eye-opening. It is set in this dystopian world where ordinary people, and it can be argued that everyone, have lost most of their rights. Everything is extremely organized and strict. People are divided into classes, in a way, and that defines their lifestyle and duties. The story focuses on a Handmaid named Ofglen, who is a sex slave. Slowly, we learn more about her life before everything changed into its strict nature.
Overall, I thought this book was pretty good. It was definitely a hard read; I kept putting myself into Ofglen's shoes and thinking about how helpless a life like that would make me feel. I felt so bad for her and how she was forced into everything in her life. She had literally no choices. Clothing? Red cloak with a white guard shielding her face. Communication? Extremely limited. Family? Gone. She is viewed as her one purpose in life is just to make a child for a man who is of a higher status than she.
Although I have a lot of unanswered questions, maybe that is an important part of the book. Some parts of it are very vague, and we only find out some details of her life towards the end, and there is some we never find out. Also, I found out it is a show on Hulu, but I have not watched any of it, so I do not know if it is good, but I can definitely say the book is impactful.
Thanks for reading!

You really capture the emotional weight of The Handmaid's Tale so well. I really felt your empathy for Ofglen and the horror of her situation. You made me want to finally read if myself. Amazing post!
ReplyDeleteI really liked your reflection on The Handmaid’s Tale. You did a great job showing how emotionally intense the story is and how it made you think about Ofglen’s situation. The way you described her lack of choice really highlights how powerful the book is.
