They Both Die at The End

Recently, I was strolling through Barnes and Noble, in search of a really sad book. As soon as I saw They Both Die at The End, I knew this book would be coming home with me. Over the next few days, I could not put this book down. Also, this book is very hard to talk about without revealing the whole plot, but I will try to avoid as many spoilers as possible!
This book is set in New York, where a technology called Death Cast has been developed that alerts people on the morning of the day they will die. And there is nothing you can do to change it. People are encouraged to say goodbye to their loved ones and try to have fun, or the little amount of fun they can have with the threat of death dangling just out of reach. This book focuses on two teenagers who get the Death-Cast alert early one morning; one practically friend-less loner, and one popular orphan. Eventually, they meet through an app called Last Friend, where Deckers (people who will die that day) can find someone to spend their last day with. So, they meet and become friends very fast. Once there is a promise of death, they find the courage to live the life they have never had.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Each little seemingly insignificant detail comes together for a tear-jerking ending. I would definitely recommend reading this book!

  1. Very interesting plot. If I received such an alert I don't think I would be able to do anything, especially hang out with someone. The existence of a Death Cast goes against my manifesto, funnily enough. Why did you want to read a sad book specifically?

  3. Hi Hazel! Looking for a sad book is so real. That plot sounds so interesting, I can't imagine having something tell me I'm going to die today and then have to be as happy as possible for my last day on earth. Nice post!

  4. Hi! This book sounds really interesting, especially how people have to be happy knowing that they will die that day. I would love to read this book soon to see how the two characters react and decide to spend their last day. Good job on your blog post!

  5. I think that this plot for a story is interesting. I wonder how different people would spend their last days if they knew when they were gonna die. I also think that having something that would notify you your death date would make people live their lives to the fullest.

  7. Hi Hazel, you surely choose a book that deserves a blog. Like everyone said already, it has a really unique and interesting plot to it. I imagine that this book starts with a pretty depressive and sad environment, but that it gets a little better the closer to the end it gets.

  8. The plot of this book is pretty interesting. One question I have is the teenagers do anything to attempt to cheat death?

    1. Spoilers ahead!

I don't really know how to answer this question because it gets pretty complicated. They are aware that Death Cast calling you and then being wrong is super-duper rare. So, they pretty much accept their fate. Also, this is not an answer to your specific question, but it reminded me of it. While people don't really try to cheat death, I feel like sometimes death cheats them. For example, one of the narrators, tells a very sad story about how his parents and sister got the call on the same day a few years back. They chose to drive up to a cabin that was very special to them, and on the way, there was an accident, and the car fell of the bridge, with only the narrator surviving. So, in scenarios like this, I feel like if his family hadn't been notified about their upcoming death, they probably wouldn't have had the same fate. So, I don't think the teens do anything to avoid it, besides being extra careful that day, but in a way, every choice they make, even the most careful and thought-out ones, lead to their deaths.
